The "Astros" roots in the Greater Boston Area run deep.

John Bertos, born in Xanthi, Greece in 1938, arrived in America on February 7, 1956.

Initially residing in Ipswich, MA, and living with relatives, John briefly attended Ipswich High School.

John learned English quickly, tutored by his Uncle Chuck Lampropoulos, a History teacher teacher, with whom he resided.

In 1957, John enrolled in an eight week program at the prestigious National Institute of Dry Cleaning - located in Maryland - where he would master the trade in which he would excel.

John and his beloved wife Virginia, (who he met in Beverly, MA - and married in 1957) would eventually settle in their Lowell home (1960)

John and Virginia raised three children - beginning in 1958, with the birth of their son George, followed by Judith (1960) and Michael (1968).

John's entrepreneurial drive in establishing both his Dry Cleaning and Janitorial operations would pave the way for his livelihood over the next several decades, allowing him to both provide a loving home for his wife and family, and to build his soccer legacy.

Beginning in the spring of 1957, he started his USA soccer career with the Beverly Club as goalkeeper. Later that same year, he would join the Boston Italians, and become a"paid" player on this Division 1 team in the MA State League.

In 1959, John joined the Peabody club. The team participated in the Open Cup, and faced off against the Pan-Hellenic of Lowell.

John Bertos was continually recognized as a leader and a standout team player, and was swiftly drafted by the Pan-Hellenic in 1959.

His upward trajectory continued - in all aspects of his life (family, business and soccer) !

Bertos played goalie for the Pan- Hellenics of Lowell, from 1959-1964.

The Pan Hellenic during this period were initially made up of primarily players of Greek descent, with a healthy mixture of international talent. In fact, several notable players on the team were Hungarians - who came to America seeking freedom and opportunity, much like Bertos.

The Pan Hellenic lineups were fluid and ever changing year over year, but always with "core" lineups, and successful seasons.

Chemistry was the driving element of success.

John was open to recruiting and developing players of all nationalities and he had a keen eye for attracting top notch talent.

In 1964, Bertos became the Pan-Hellenics' Head Coach and General Manager.

Affiliated with MA Soccer League - The Pan Hellenic of Lowell won the 1964 Massachusetts State Cup.
