In 1965, the Lowell Pan-Hellenics became The Lowell Astros.

In 1966, John Bertos made the first of several recruiting trips to Brazil, where he would acquire scores of top Brazilian players, over the ensuing decade. (1966-1975)

Bertos provided housing and helped players assimilate in a brand new world. Most of these individuals initially did not speak a word of English, but believed in an experience, and a dream, that only Bertos could successfully promote.

The 1965-6 Lowell Astros lineups reflect the beginnings of a number of John's recruiting efforts of Brazilian players.

The 1966 Lowell Astros fell to Newton 3-2 for the "National Open" Cup on November 6, 1966.
