Syracuse Suns To Host Boston Astros in Home Debut Sunday

The Syracuse Suns, who played strongly despite a loss to the powerful Baltimore Bays last weekend, will open their 1973 home campaign Sunday against the Boston Astros at MacArthur Stadium. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

The Suns, 0-2, were a much Improved club in their second American Soccer League outing, battling the tough Bays defense and a torrential rain storm before bowing to the pre-season title favorites.

Suns coach Augie Thomas was particularly impressed with Ithaca College grad Steve Klingman, his team's most impressive performer for the second straight game, along with fullback Luis Montinegro.

The Astros have looked strong in exhibition games far, defeating the Connecticut Wildcats, 2-1, and bowing to the Finn Harps, a touring team from Ireland, 7-4.

They also reached the semifinals of the U.S. National Open Cup before losing to the New York Soccer Club (formerly the Greeks of the ASL), 2-1.

Boston's most impressive performance, however, was a 3-2 win last Saturday over Waterford, Ireland's championship team which boasted a three-goal average during the 1972-73 Irish soccer season.

Sunday's game (June 4, 1973) will be the Astros' first of the Regular ASL Season.

Jose Soroa’s eighth-minute finish over Tony DiCicco made the difference as the Astros (6W-2L-1D, 13 points) pulled within three points of the first-place Wildcats (7W-2L-2D, 16 points).

DiCicco (b. in Wethersfield, Conn., Aug. 5, 1948) played at Springfield College, going on to an ASL career with the Wildcats and Rhode Island Oceaneers.

DiCicco played once for the U.S. in a match against Lazio in 1973, then went on to join the U.S. Women’s National Team as an assistant under Anson Dorrance, becoming head coach from 1994-1999 (103-8-8 record).

DiCicco guided the U.S. to the 1996 Olympic championship, the 1999 Women’s World Cup title and the 2008 U-20 WWC, then coached the Boston Breakers from 2009-11.
